PICO Portal celebrates World Evidence-Based Healthcare Day today – giving special thanks to our industry partners and research community dedicated to making a positive impact across health sciences. We’re also sharing few updates this month, including recent insights, upcoming learning opportunities, and the latest PICO Portal features designed to advance evidence-based practice.
Industry News: The Challenges of AI
Artificial intelligence continues to reshape evidence synthesis, but with innovation comes responsibility. During a recent webinar, Dr. Karen Robinson, Johns Hopkins University & Chief Scientific Officer, PICO Portal, emphasized that while AI dramatically improves the speed, accuracy, and scalability of systematic reviews, it also raises new challenges. She notes that the research community must ensure transparency from both developers and users, uphold human accountability, and adopt principles of fairness, sustainability, and legal compliance.

Learning Opportunities: Knowledge & Regulations
Join PICO Portal on Tuesday, November 11 at 11am EST / 4pm GMT for an expert-led discussion on the critical role of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in meeting regulatory standards for medical device and diagnostic manufacturers.
Thought leaders Sue Lacey Bryant, former Chief Knowledge Officer for England’s National Health Service (NHS) and Dr. Rhodri Saunders, Founding Director of Coreva Scientific, will explore how today’s technology can address the growing challenges in regulatory evidence generation, making compliance faster, more transparent, and scientifically robust.

PICO Portal Feature Highlight: Snowball Searching
Traditional database searches can miss up to 51% of relevant studies, according to research on this topic by Claes Wohlin, et. al. 2021 and T Greenhalgh 2005. PICO Portal’s automated snowballing feature conducts backwards and/or forward searches leveraging citations from identified eligible articles, significantly accelerating literature discovery.
In a recent experiment, we leveraged PICO Portal to instantly retrieve 1,839 additional records, then used AI prediction and deduplication to narrow the list to 490 articles, reducing manual screening time by roughly 15 hours. Faster, smarter, and more complete – this is snowballing redefined.
